Common Weight Loss Injections/Jabs: Ozempic and Mounjaro

Common Weight Loss Injections/Jabs: Ozempic and Mounjaro
Mounjaro and Ozempic are are the commonly used weight loss jabs in the UK.
1. What are they?

The two injections act by mimicking our natural incretin hormones.

  • Ozempic: Contains semaglutide, which acts like a hormone (GLP-1) to make you feel less hungry.
  • Mounjaro: Contains tirzepatide, which works on two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) to control hunger and feeling full for longer which leads to weight loss.
2. Weight Loss
  • Ozempic: Helps you lose about 8-12% of your body weight (e.g., about 1-2 stone for a 14-stone person) over a year.
  • Mounjaro: Works better for weight loss, helping you lose 15-25% of your body weight (e.g., 2-3.5 stone for a 14-stone person). Its dual hormone action makes it stronger.
3. How You Take Them
  • Both are injected once a week in your tummy, thigh, or arm.
  • Ozempic: Doses go from 0.25 mg to 2 mg. You use the same pen multiple times, changing the needle each time.
  • Mounjaro: Doses go from 2.5 mg to 15 mg. You use a new pen each time.
4. Blood Sugar Control
  • Ozempic: Lowers blood sugar (A1C) by about 1.9%.
  • Mounjaro: Lowers blood sugar more, by about 2-2.3%, so it’s better for diabetes control.
5. Side Effects
  • Both can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, or tummy upset. Mounjaro might cause slightly more tummy issues because of its dual action.
  • Both have a rare risk of serious issues like pancreas or thyroid problems (seen in animal studies).
  • Some people find Mounjaro has fewer side effects, but it varies.
6. Cost
  • Ozempic: Costs about £700-£800/month without insurance. Cheaper with NHS or private coverage for diabetes.
  • Mounjaro: Costs about £800-£950/month, a bit pricier. NHS coverage is mostly for diabetes or weight loss in specific cases.
  • Both are expensive if used for weight loss without coverage.
8. Availability
  • Ozempic: Available since 2017, widely used, but sometimes hard to get due to demand for weight loss.
  • Mounjaro: Newer (approved 2022), approved for weight loss in the UK, but supply can be limited.
